In 2003, I was invited to become a field editor for Better Homes & Gardens. This included styling for the photos shoots and seemed the perfect extension of my design work.
Over time, I have found that I prefer to work with projects that I describe as “full”. They don’t need me to bring in a truckload of accessories to “finish” the place, looking more like an ad for Pottery Barn. If that is the case, it is either not yet interesting enough to be shot or I am stepping on someone’s toes. It should already have the layers in place and be a unique expression of the homeowner.
I show up with a few simple flowers and begin to move the homeowner’s furnishings and objects into the frame of a talented photographer. My mantra today – “When in doubt, take it out.” Let a space speak for itself. |
